The Basics

What does This mean?

Zero-Emission heating equipment standards limit the sale of building equipment that produce greenhouse gases (GHG) and air pollutants, such as space and water heaters.

Why Does This Matter?

Transitioning building equipment to zero-emission is important for improving air pollution and meeting climate goals. In addition to GHG, these sources contribute to NOx and PM 2.5 emissions. Air pollution from this source disproportionately impacts residents of color.

How can this advance equitable building decarbonization?

These standards target CO2 emissions, reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions from buildings helping us meet air quality and climate goals. However, particular strategies need to be employed to ensure environmental justice and frontline communities benefit from these policies and are not unintentionally harmed, such as tenant and energy cost protections.
